A Christian from the island of Rab in present-day Croatia, Marinus fled across the sea from the Great Persecution of the third century. A stonemason, Marinus settled on Monte Titano, where he built a small monastery and lived as a hermit. Over the centuries, the settlement surrounding the monastery grew into what is now the City of San Marino, capital of the Republic of San Marino, population 33,562.
